Job Description for Assistant Project Manager, Construction
Assistant project managers in construction are responsible for communicating with people involved in a project (owners, vendors, subcontractors, etc.), and with a design team. Assistant project managers typically review plans and drawings, prepare estimates according to budgets, hold meetings and set and oversee construction schedules. People in this position might also write contracts. These managers work indoors and outdoors depending on the project. Some work (such as paperwork) might be done indoors, either in an established office or an "on-site" office, which is a designated area in the location of construction, such as a trailer that is set on-site for the duration of the project. Assistant project managers work with engineers, builders, owners and people who oversee the financial aspects of the project. They also work with safety personnel to ensure that such requirements are being legally met. While there is typically no specific school program for such positions, this is a demanding job that requires excellent communication skills and an ability to work effectively with and lead a team. A knowledge of software specific to various construction tasks is generally required. People in this type of position should be able to smoothly handle a variety of situations and problems that may arise--sometimes several at once--and either solve them or work with others involved in order to come to cooperative resolution. Being involved in construction often means that work takes place during times when traffic or certain populations are not around, but this is not always the case. So, assistant project managers must be able to do their work regardless what is happening around them. They might be required to work at night or during the day, any day of the week. The work is mental and may involve certain physical capabilities in an indoor or outdoor setting. They may be employed by small or large firms, and can handle everything from small to huge construction projects.
