Job Description for Construction Foreman
A construction foreperson supervises a construction crew. The construction may relate to the erection or repair of a building or and an infrastructure, such as a bridge. The foreperson will schedule work for the crew and may also be responsible for making proposals and obtaining new jobs. The foreperson will be expected to have construction experience. The foreperson will need to assist the crew wherever help is needed, including carrying out hard labor. The abilities to work in extreme temperatures, to work with hand and power tools, to stand and walk for a long period of time, and to lift heavy objects are essential. The foreperson may also work with designers and architects, in order to create blueprints and diagrams.
Most of the work is on a full-time basis, though there may be breaks in between projects. The work of several crew members will be overseen, so it is important to make sure that they are doing the job in the correct manner. Behavior not beneficial to the goals of the project should be corrected immediately. Duties such as employee evaluations, hiring and firing, and administering payroll will be carried out by the foreperson. It may also be necessary to create daily and periodic reports for stakeholders and management.
The foreperson will often have to work within a budget and will need to make sure to keep costs low, though this should not interfere with the quality of work or materials used. The foreperson may need to have a degree in construction management, though some people will be able to become a foreperson by working their way up through the ranks.
